Paved Road Ends
Many rural roads in Iceland change from paved roads to gravel roads.
- Slow down immediately
- Reduce speed before entering gravel
- Drive carefully and keep control of the vehicle
Speed Limits
Speed signs will indicate the maximum speed, the general rules are:
- 50 km/h in towns
- 80 km/h on gravel roads
- 90 km/h on paved rural roads
- Speed cameras and police patrols are common
Right of Way
Oncoming traffic has priority.
- Reduce speed
- Stop if needed
- Wait for vehicles to pass safely
Slippery Road
- Road surface may suddenly become slippery
- Common on bridges and loose gravel roads
- Avoid sudden braking or steering
Animals Ahead
- Animals may suddenly cross the road
- Slow down in rural areas
- Be prepared to stop safely
Roundabout
- Inner lane has priority when exiting
- Always signal when leaving
- Watch carefully before changing lanes
Extreme Wind Gusts
- Hold the steering wheel firmly
- Reduce speed during windy conditions
- Be aware of sand and ash storms

Prohibited Signs and Dangerous Actions
No Alcohol While Driving
- Drinking and driving is illegal
- Heavy fines apply
- Never drive under the influence
Off-Road Driving Is Illegal
- Stay on marked roads only
- Off-road driving damages nature permanently
- No insurance covers off-road damage
No Stopping on Roadsides
- Do not stop to take photos
- Use designated parking areas
- Keep yourself and others safe
No Phone While Driving
- Using a phone while driving is illegal
- Use hands-free if necessary
- Stop safely before using your phone
Rooftop Damage
- Do not stand or sit on the roof
- Roof damage is not covered
- Repair costs can be very high
Important Driving Information
Extreme High Wind
- Hold car doors firmly when opening
- Park facing against the wind when possible
- Wind can damage doors easily
Correct Fuel Type
- Green nozzle = Gasoline / Petrol
- Black nozzle = Diesel
- Wrong fuel can seriously damage the engine
Black Ice
- Stay calm if the car slides
- Avoid sudden braking
- Keep steering movements gentle
